Dear Mr. Hilton,
The children of North Charleston need a firm foundation to begin their lives, which reading and an early literacy program can provide. I gladly offer my support to the Liberty Hill Improvement Council’s Afterschool Literacy Program.
The need for a highly literate citizenry increases as our community moves toward an increasingly technological future. More than 12,000 adults in North Charleston do not have high school credentials, negatively affecting their ability to become employed and to participate fully as citizens. Basic literacy skills, which Liberty Hill Improvement Council is targeting, greatly increase the educational success of our youth and the long term prosperity and quality of life of our community.
I look forward to the success of your Afterschool Literacy Program and applaud you and the members of the Liberty Hill Improvement Counsel for taking proactive steps to make North Charleston a better place to live, work and play.
R. Keith Summey
Mayor of the City of North Charleston
